It IS building communities! And our cause this week for bootcamp & brunch on Saturday June 22 at 8:30 am is an organization that works to do JUST that.
Commemorating the lives lost at the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting December 14th, 2012, the Avielle Foundation- named after one of the victims, Avielle Rose Richman, has the following mission:
To prevent violence by fostering brain health research, education, and policy; and community development, engagement, and responsibility. The foundation will do so by directing resources to support
- Breakthrough research in brain health, bridging behavioral and biochemical sciences
- Community-based initiatives and programs which: strengthen connectivity, empathy, and understanding; decrease the shame, secrecy, and stigma associated with brain illness; and ultimately facilitate appropriate early-identification and prevention/intervention methods to prevent violence.
The Avielle Foundation aims to support and protect our vulnerable loved ones and to strengthen communities through brain health initiatives and community engagement.
About Avielle
Avielle had a strong sense of justice and fairness and was a steadfast friend and advocate for anyone she thought in need....Avielle loved school and was fiercely proud to be part of a community comprised of her classmates and educators. Avielle was murdered with 19 of her classmates and 6 of her teachers and administrators on December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, CT. Our heartbreak and sadness are unfathomable. We started the Avielle Foundation to fund research exploring the underpinnings of the brain that lead to violent behaviors, and to foster the engagement of communities to apply these insights.
